What Is Medication-Assisted Treatment?
Medication-assisted treatment combines FDA-approved medication with counseling to treat substance use disorders. The medication eases cravings or withdrawal. Therapy helps you change the patterns behind your use.
Buprenorphine is one of the treatment options listed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Naltrexone is on that list too. These are the active ingredients in Suboxone and Vivitrol.

Suboxone is a daily medication for opioid use disorder. Buprenorphine eases cravings and withdrawal without the full effect of other opioids. Naloxone is added to discourage misuse.

Vivitrol Treatment (Naltrexone)
Vivitrol, often called the Vivitrol shot, is a once-monthly injection for opioid use disorder or alcohol use disorder. It blocks the effects of opioids. It also reduces alcohol cravings. You need to be free of opioids for 7 to 14 days before your first dose.

Suboxone vs Vivitrol: Which Is Right for You?
Both medications support recovery, but they work in different ways.
- How it works: Suboxone partly activates opioid receptors to ease cravings. Vivitrol blocks those receptors completely.
- How you take it: Suboxone is a daily film or tablet. Vivitrol is one injection each month.
- When you can start: Suboxone can begin once mild withdrawal starts. Vivitrol requires 7 to 14 days without opioids.
- What it treats: Suboxone treats opioid use disorder. Vivitrol treats opioid use disorder or alcohol use disorder.

At Lotus, Vivitrol for alcohol use disorder is paired with our alcohol addiction treatment program, so you get medical support with counseling. You need to stop drinking before your first Vivitrol dose.
Getting MAT While You Attend PHP, IOP or Evening Treatment
For opioid addiction treatment, MAT is part of your full drug addiction treatment plan. You take your medication while you attend one of our outpatient programs.
Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the most structured option. If you need to keep working or studying, the intensive outpatient program (IOP) runs fewer hours. The evening program meets after work. As you progress, you step down to our outpatient program (OP).
Sober living is available for clients enrolled in our outpatient treatment. Veterans and active duty service members can also join our military program.

There is no set end date. Some people take Suboxone for months, while others stay on it for years. You and your Suboxone doctor decide together. Any taper happens slowly to protect your recovery.
Can I take Vivitrol if I drink alcohol?
Vivitrol is approved for alcohol use disorder, but you need to stop drinking before your first dose. It lowers cravings over time. Your doctor will help you plan a safe way to stop before you begin.
Can I switch from Suboxone to Vivitrol?
Yes, with medical supervision. You need to be off Suboxone for 7 to 14 days before your first Vivitrol injection, or it can trigger withdrawal. Your doctor will plan the timing with you.
